Family Names in the UK Project to Query Our Study Among Others

As a Guild of One-Name Studies registered surname study, the Bowes study will be queried on its findings by the first of its kind Family Names in the UK Project through the University of the West of England. The Project is considering ways to incorporate DNA findings. Now, in preparation for that inclusion, is a good time to really build our DNA database and watch lineages, variants and migration patterns emerge; a win-win for family researchers and our surname history!

DNA Project Now Includes Autosomal Testing

Our human DNA consists of the Y chromosome (carried by males and serving as a marker for a surname lineage), the X chromosome (carried by males and females) and autosomal DNA (carried by males and females). The Y chromosome test is the most useful to a surname study and its traditional underpinning. With it you can find matches along the patrilineal surname line since the time that surnames came into use, 500 and more years ago depending on the geographic area. This is the best way to identify the different lineages of a surname and for people to determine which lineage their family belongs to, compare notes with their matches, and explore their early surname origins.

But there is a new autosomal DNA test offered by Family Tree DNA that anyone can take. It's called Family Finder. Because it tests the autosomal DNA which carries markers from all your ancestral lines, you can find matches beyond your patrilineal surname line. It expands your DNA research to many different surnames on your tree. In general, the more recent the common ancestor between two people lived, the more likely it is that Family Finder will reveal a matching autosomal segment. While it is indicated for identifying matches as far back as fifth cousins (the common ancestor there being seven generations back, or roughly 200 years), many are finding matches that are older.

Early Irish, Ely Carroll Bowe Group Discovered

We have found that one of the subgroups in our DNA Project genetically matches the DNA signature, or modal, for an early Irish cluster of septs associated with Ely Carroll and the O'Carroll family of that area. Ely Carroll refers to an old area covering parts of today's counties Offaly, Laois and Tipperary (the exact boundaries changed over the centuries with the rising and falling of ruling tribes). A number of Irish names originated there, but Ely Carroll is most strongly associated with a powerful and wealthy O'Carroll line. When this ruling O'Carroll family lost their lands to the English in the 1600s, they were given a land grant in Maryland and became important players in colonial America, including one who was the only Catholic signer of the Declaration of Independence. The Bowe members in this DNA subgroup, along with other names connected to Ely Carroll, match today's US descendent of that O'Carroll line with a genetic distance placing their common ancestor back in Ely Carroll. To our knowledge, this is the first time the Bowe name has ever been associated with Ely Carroll.

Family Names of the United Kingdom–Comprehensive Surname Study Underway Will Collaborate with Guild Surname Studies

Funds to conduct a massive study of UK surnames, using all old sources of information along with new ones that have not yet been used, was awarded in the fall of 2009.

Variants Covered in the Bowes (and variants) DNA Project Adjusted To Improve Meaningfulness of Results

Originally, in 2004, I included a number of surnames in the DNA Project that were possible genetic variants to our core surnames of Bowes and Bowe. Little did I know at that time how many different genetic lines there would be for Bowes and Bowe, as well as for some of the other surnames I was including. As it turns out, some of those other surnames -- like Buie and Bowie -- also are beginning a pattern of establishing distinct genetic lines, none of which relate genetically to Bowes or Bowe.

I can see the writing on the wall: over time there would be a growing number of such lineages in the project, none of whom match our core surnames. I unknowingly put myself in the position of running multiple surname projects under the umbrella of my own, even when some of these names already have their own surname projects in progress with another administrator.

So, I have gone over the Variants page at this website and revised the list of variants to be included in the DNA Project. The list now includes the five core names in the one-name study registered with the Guild, along with other unusual and possible genetic variants noted in documentary and other research, when those names do not have a separate surname study set up. If ever a genetic match does turn up from among possible variants in other surname studies, the person in our study that is matched will receive notice. Those "variant" individuals would then appropriately join our study.

DNA Project General Fund Set Up

I hear from many people who bear our surname(s) and want to join the DNA Project but cannot afford the cost. The DNA Project has established a GENERAL FUND to accept donations in any amount, and in any currency, by credit card. These funds will be held safely in trust at the testing company, Family Tree DNA, until applied to help sponsor test kits for key males who would otherwise be unable to afford the cost of participation in the project. Data obtained by DNA testing advances our one-name study while assisting individual participants who need financial help in their own family's genetic research!
