NB
This section receives little attention while focusing on the primary components of a one-name study: Variants, Distribution and Frequency and the DNA Project. I add to it whenever I stumble on an immigrant mentioned online.
A surname study typically tries to identify the early geographic and circumstantial origins of a surname. However many researchers can only trace their origin to a particular immigrant in more recent times. They have little or no knowledge of their family history before that immigrant. Even if their earlier origins were ascertained, they could be different from the "main" English and Irish ones. In this study we broaden our notion of origins to include immigrants in order to help these family researchers.
An interesting website for immigrants from Ireland can be found at irishdiaspora.net, the Irish Diaspora Studies scholarly network in association with The Institute of Communications Studies, University of Leeds, UK.
