Studies of this subclade to identify smaller subclades within it are ongoing. So far the following groups–clusters that share unique Y-chromosome values–have been isolated. Northwest Irish (Niall of the Nine Hostages) – FTDNA will tell you on your personal page if you are part of this group.
South Irish Modal at YSearch ID = XREMB – highly associated with Eoganacht surnames.
Irish Type III Modal at YSearch ID = JAH5C – L226. See Irish Type III and Dál gCais websites.
Leinster/Irish Sea Modal at YSearch ID = AQ7B8 – L159.2; MacMurrough, Kavanagh, MacMurrough, Kavanagh, Kavanaugh, Kinsella, Redmond, Redmonds. See the DYS464Xccgg Project. The most important key marker values for the Leinster Cluster are DYS389-1=14 or higher, DYS448=18 or lower, CDYa=38 or higher, CDYb=39 or higher, DYS442=11 or lower, DYS557=17 or higher, DYS446=14 or higher. Most men in this group seem to match at least 4 or 5 of these key marker values. See The Leinster Modal.
Scots Cluster at YSearch ID = UZ2MM – no SNP identified yet/DYS 391=10, DYS 531=12 &
DYS 717=21; usually will test negative for the other SNPs downstream of L-21 (as of March 31, 2000) (origins are unclear) See Scots-Modal Origins and Clan Donald USA Genetic Genealogy Project. "Key markers include GATA H4=12, YCAIIa/b=19/24 or 19/22, DYS 461=11, DYS 635=24, DYS444=11, DYS531=12, DYS717=21 & (possibly DYF 401a/b=16/18 or 17/18). Only a handful of Scots Modal haplotypes have been tested to this extent, & the results are very suggestive that only a fraction of haplotypes that are DYS393=13, DYS390=24, DYS19=14, and DYS391=10 will continue to
