Paternal surname changed from Slater to Bowes. This Bowes line moved to nearby the Slaters in Lancashire sometime around or after 1822. They had lived in Thwaite, Cumberland, where their family can be traced to the early 16th c. 9 March 1850 Mary Slater marries Matthew Bowes two weeks after giving birth to Abraham Slater (name on birth certificate). Abraham becomes known as Abraham Slater Bowes. Abraham's father may in fact have been Matthew, while the person who wrote his name on the birth certificate used Slater since Mary was single at the time of his birth.
