I am a direct descendent of a Robert Bowes from Clones [Fermanagh]. We were Protestant "Scotch Irish" and I have visited Robert Bowes' stone house in Clones [below]. My father has some of his paper work regarding the land grant Alexander Bowes received for moving to Ireland in an effort to Protestantize [the Irish], have you heard the term "Land Grant Scot"?
Here is my list of ancestors as far back as I can go:
Alexander Bowes (b. about 1680 Scotland)
Joseph Bowes (b. 1699 Clones, Ireland)
Robert Bowes (b. 1735 Clones, Ireland)
Robert Bowes (b. Jan 14 1776, Clones, Ireland. Moved to PA about 1795)
Joseph M. Bowes (b. 1799, Clones, Ireland. Moved to PA Feb 27, 1819. d. about 1850)
Manning Force Bowes (b. 1837, Halifax, PA)
Nelson Manning Bowes (b. about 1862, Halifax, PA)
Julian Nelson Bowes (b. about 1885, Old Saybrook, MA) (1 brother Eugene)
Nelson Dowd Bowes (b. about 1915) (no siblings)
Research Notes
This line, having arrived in Ireland somewhat early, may well represent the founding Bowes family from Northern Ireland as illustrated in the 1911 census distribution map for the name.
Some posts in this thread at Ancestry.com discuss a line from Clones, Monaghan, that may be related.
